The beam splitter is splitting

A beam splitter splits an incoming light beam into two separate beams, typically a transmitted beam and a reflected beam. A beam splitter is an optical device designed to divide a single incident light beam into two or more beams along different paths, allowing one light source to serve multiple purposes within an optical system. The split can be based on optical power, where the intensity of the transmitted and reflected beams is controlled, or on polarization, where the beams have distinct polarization states.

How It Works

The splitting occurs through partial reflection and partial transmission. When light strikes the beam splitter's surface, a portion passes through (transmitted) while the remainder is reflected. The exact ratio of reflected to transmitted light is determined by coatings on the splitter, which can be metallic (like aluminum) or dielectric multilayers, engineered to achieve specific split ratios such as 50/50 or 70/30.

Types of Beam Splitters

Cube beam splitters: Made from two triangular prisms glued together, often used for precise 50/50 splits. Plate beam splitters: Thin glass plates with a reflective coating on one surface, commonly used at a 45° angle of incidence. Polarizing beam splitters: Use birefringent materials to separate light into orthogonal polarization states.

Applications

Beam splitters are widely used in interferometers, laser systems, cameras, projectors, and fiber optic communications, enabling simultaneous measurement, imaging, or signal routing. Some designs allow variable splitting ratios, adjustable by rotating optical elements or waveplates, to control the distribution of light between the output beams. In summary, a beam splitter splits light into multiple beams either by intensity or polarization, while maintaining the same wavelength as the original light, making it a fundamental component in many optical systems.
