Optical Module Electrical Interface Type

Optical modules use electrical interfaces to connect to host systems, ranging from analog NRZ to retimed digital interfaces defined by standards like CEI and ACO.

Overview of Electrical Interfaces

Optical modules have an electrical interface on the side that connects to the host system and an optical interface for fiber connections. The electrical interface is critical for transmitting and receiving signals between the module and the system board, and its type often depends on the module form factor and the Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) standards.

Types of Electrical Interfaces

Analog NR

Z Interface Early optical modules used an analog Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) interface, where the module directly drove the laser or LED with analog signals from the system card. The receiver side also output analog signals directly to the host. Retimed Digital Interface As data rates increased, retimed digital interfaces were introduced.

These interfaces include internal signal retiming to reduce jitter and improve signal integrity. The Common Electrical Interface (CEI), defined by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), is a widely adopted standard for these digital interfaces. Analog Coherent Optics (ACO) Interface The CFP2-ACO standard allows the digital signal processor (DSP) to reside on the main board while the module contains analog optical components.

This configuration is used in coherent optics applications where the module power budget is limited.

AC

O interfaces support advanced modulation formats like DP-QPSK and QAM-16. Electrical Interface Modules Some modules, called electrical interface modules, implement either active or passive electrical connections without optical conversion. These modules are used for short-distance data transmission and can be classified similarly to optical modules (e.g., SFP, SFP+, GBIC) but transmit electrical signals directly.

Common Module Form Factors and InterfacesSFP/SFP+: Small form-factor pluggable modules with electrical interfaces for 1G to 10G Ethernet. SFP+ supports higher speeds and lower power consumption. QSFP/QSFP28: Quad-channel modules with parallel electrical interfaces, supporting 40G to 100G transmission.

CFP2-ACO: Coherent optics modules with analog electrical interfaces connecting to an external DSP.

Summary

The electrical interface type of an optical module depends on the module's speed, form factor, and application. It can be analog NRZ, retimed digital (CEI), or analog coherent (ACO). These interfaces ensure proper signal transmission between the host system and the optical module, supporting high-speed data communication while adhering to industry standards.
