Ordinary optical cables and butterfly optical cables

Butterfly-shaped optical cables feature a flat, wing-like design with enhanced bend resistance and fiber protection, making them ideal for tight spaces and FTTH deployments, whereas ordinary optical cables are typically round and less optimized for directional bending. Design and StructureButterfly-shaped cables have a distinctive flat, wing-like cross-section with the optical fiber at the center flanked by two parallel strength members, usually made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP). This design provides inherent directional bending: bending along the flat plane causes minimal stress, while edge-on bending requires more force, reducing accidental kinks.

Some outdoor variants include a steel messenger wire for aerial self-supporting runs. The sheath is often LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) for indoor safety, with additional PE or steel tape layers for outdoor durability. Ordinary optical cables are typically round, with fibers enclosed in a central core surrounded by strength members and protective sheaths.

While they provide general protection and flexibility, they are less optimized for directional bending and may require more careful handling in tight spaces.

Fiber Type and Performance

Butterfly cables almost universally use bend-insensitive single-mode fibers (ITU-T G. 657 standard), which tolerate tight bend radii (as low as 10 mm for G. 657.

A1) without significant signal loss. Ordinary optical cables often use G. 652 fibers, which are less tolerant to sharp bends, making butterfly cables superior for installations with tight corners or conduit entries.

Installation Advantages

Space Efficiency: The flat design allows easier routing along walls, ceilings, and inside conduits. Flexibility: Butterfly cables are highly flexible and lightweight, simplifying installation in confined areas. Durability: Strength members protect fibers from compression and tensile stress, and outdoor variants resist UV, moisture, and mechanical damage.

Low Signal Loss: Fusion or mechanical splicing of butterfly cables ensures minimal attenuation. Ordinary round cables are easier to manufacture and widely used for backbone or general-purpose installations but may require more space and careful handling in dense or complex routing scenarios. ApplicationsButterfly-shaped cables are ideal for: FTTH (Fiber to the Home) indoor and outdoor drops High-density data centers and networking Industrial automation and medical equipment where space and reliability are critical Ordinary optical cables are commonly used for: Long-haul backbone networksGeneral indoor/outdoor cabling where tight bends are less frequentStandard telecommunications and enterprise networksSummaryButterfly-shaped optical cables offer enhanced bend resistance, compact form factor, and fiber protection, making them particularly suitable for FTTH, high-density, and space-constrained installations.

Ordinary round optical cables remain versatile for general-purpose deployments but lack the specialized features that make butterfly cables advantageous in tight or complex routing environments. Choosing between the two depends on installation space, fiber type requirements, and environmental conditions.
