Cable trays inside the building

Cable trays inside buildings provide organized, safe, and accessible pathways for electrical conductors, ensuring compliance with standards and facilitating maintenance.

Purpose and Applications

Cable trays are rigid structural systems designed to support and route electrical cables over long distances inside buildings, including electrical rooms, plant rooms, and service corridors. They are commonly used in commercial offices, industrial facilities, and factories where maintenance access is required. Cable trays can carry power, control, communication, and signaling circuits, providing a flexible alternative to conduit systems.

Types of Cable Trays

Ladder Trays: Feature two side rails connected by rungs, ideal for large power cables due to excellent ventilation and convenient cable anchoring points. Ventilated Trough Trays: Solid bottom with ventilation holes, suitable for smaller control and instrumentation cables, preventing sagging between rungs. Solid or Channel Trays: Provide protection against electromagnetic interference and are used where heat buildup is minimal or aesthetics are important.

Nonmetallic (FRP) Trays: Resistant to corrosion and non-conductive, suitable for high-moisture or chemically aggressive environments.

Installation Guidelines

Planning and Layout: Review approved shop drawings to determine tray routes, lengths, and locations. Ensure horizontal and vertical runs avoid clashes with other services and maintain sufficient clearance for cable pulling and future maintenance. Support Systems: Use hangers, threaded rods, and clamps to secure trays.

Proper positioning of vertical hangers is critical, and horizontal adjustment is limited by rod length. Support spans should comply with manufacturer recommendations to prevent sagging. Clearances and Safety: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access.

Cable trays must remain accessible and cannot be installed in hoistways or enclosed spaces. Cable Fill and Separation: Power cables should not exceed 40% of tray cross-sectional area; control cables up to 50%. High-power and low-power cables must be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference.

Grounding and Bonding: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors if they meet NEC requirements. Proper bonding ensures safety and reduces electrical hazards. Material Handling: Store trays horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports, protect from moisture and sunlight, and inspect for damage before installation.

Best Practices

Use sunlight-resistant cables and expansion splice plates in areas exposed to thermal changes. Ensure proper fire-stopping measures when trays pass through walls or partitions. Select tray material based on environmental conditions, load requirements, and corrosion resistance.

Maintain organized cable routing to facilitate future maintenance and upgrades. By following these guidelines, cable trays installed inside buildings provide a safe, organized, and code-compliant solution for electrical distribution, while allowing easy access for maintenance and future expansion.
