What level of electrical distribution box is commonly used on construction sites

Construction sites typically use tertiary (or site-level) distribution boxes to safely supply power to individual equipment and temporary installations.

Distribution Box Levels

Construction site electrical systems are organized into three levels: Primary Distribution Box: Acts as the main distribution point, usually located near the incoming power supply or transformer. It handles high-voltage input (e.g., 0. 4kV) and distributes power to secondary distribution boxes.

It generally does not supply power directly to end-use equipment and includes isolating switches, circuit breakers, and residual current devices (RCDs) for safety. Secondary Distribution Box: Receives power from the primary box and distributes it to specific buildings, floors, or larger equipment. It handles three-phase power and is equipped with larger circuit breakers to manage motors or machinery.

Tertiary Distribution Box (Site Distribution Box): This is the final level, delivering power directly to construction equipment, tools, and temporary installations. It provides local control and strict safety protection, often including individual circuit breakers and RCDs for each connected device. Tertiary boxes can be fixed or portable, making them suitable for dynamic construction environments.

Installation and Safety Considerations

Placement: Distribution boxes should be installed in ventilated, dry areas away from harmful media such as gas, steam, or liquids. They must be protected from impact, vibration, and heat sources, with sufficient space for maintenance and operation by two people simultaneously. Construction: Boxes are typically made of steel or high-quality insulating materials, with iron plate thickness greater than 1.

5mm. Electrical components are mounted on insulated plates and properly grounded. Distance Guidelines: The distance between secondary and tertiary boxes should not exceed 30 meters, and the horizontal distance between a switch box and fixed equipment should not exceed 3 meters.

Protection Devices: Each circuit should have its own breaker or fuse, and wiring must be insulated with no exposed live parts. Protective neutral connections are required for metal enclosures and equipment.

Practical Use

On construction sites, tertiary distribution boxes are the most commonly used for temporary power supply to tools, lighting, and machinery. They ensure safety, flexibility, and compliance with electrical standards while allowing easy relocation as the site layout changes. Primary and secondary boxes are usually installed in more permanent locations to manage overall site power distribution.
