Different switches in the distribution box

Distribution boxes typically contain circuit breakers, fuses, residual current devices (RCCBs/RCDs), isolators, and sometimes automatic transfer switches (ATS) to manage and protect electrical circuits. Main Types of Switches1. Circuit Breakers (MCBs/ACBs): These are automatic switches that protect individual circuits from overcurrent or short circuits.

When excessive current flows, the breaker trips, cutting off power to prevent damage to appliances and wiring. Modern breakers can be reset manually after resolving the fault. 2.

Fuses: Fuses are sacrificial devices that melt when current exceeds a safe level, interrupting the circuit. They are simpler than breakers but need replacement after a fault. 3.

Residual Current Devices (RCCBs/RCDs): These switches detect leakage currents to earth and disconnect the circuit to prevent electric shocks. They are often installed alongside MCBs for enhanced safety. 4.

Isolators (Disconnect Switches): Manually operated switches that isolate a circuit for maintenance or emergency purposes. They ensure that a section of the electrical system can be safely worked on without affecting the rest of the installation. 5.

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS): Common in commercial, industrial, or critical facilities, ATS automatically switches the power supply from the main source to a backup generator during outages, ensuring uninterrupted power.

Additional Components

Distribution boxes also include busbars for power distribution, neutral and earth bars for grounding, and sometimes indication lights or smart modules for monitoring circuit status. The combination of these switches and components ensures safe, organized, and efficient power distribution throughout a building. In summary, a distribution box integrates protective and operational switches to manage electrical circuits safely, prevent overloads, and allow maintenance without disrupting the entire system.
