Remaining optical fiber cable materials

Beyond the optical fiber core, fiber optic cables include coatings, buffer layers, strength members, water-blocking elements, armoring, and protective jackets to ensure durability, performance, and environmental protection.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the fiber that transmits light, typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium to control the refractive index. Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica, which has a slightly lower refractive index to enable total internal reflection and efficient light transmission.

Coatings and Buffers

Each fiber is coated with a dual-layer acrylate polymer: a soft primary coating to cushion the glass and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection. The fiber may also have a buffer layer or core tube, often made of acrylate or other polymers, to protect against physical damage and environmental stress.

Strength Members

To prevent fiber elongation and provide tensile strength, cables include strength members such as aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass rods, or steel wires. These elements help the cable withstand pulling forces during installation and environmental stress over time.

Water-

Blocking and Gel ElementsFor outdoor or underground applications, water-blocking materials are used to prevent moisture ingress. These can include water-repellent gels, powders, or tape layers that swell upon contact with water, protecting the fibers from damage.

Armoring

Some cables, especially those installed in harsh environments or undersea, include metallic armoring such as steel tape or rods to protect against mechanical damage, rodent attacks, or abrasion. Armoring is often combined with the outer jacket for additional protection.

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket provides the final layer of protection and is made from materials like polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds. The choice depends on the installation environment, UV exposure, fire safety requirements, and flexibility needs.

Additional Materials

Identification inks: UV-cured color inks for fiber identification in multi-fiber cables. Ribbon matrix resins: UV-curable resins used in ribbon fiber cables. Micro-additives: Glass flakes, borates, or chemical repellents to enhance durability or environmental resistance.

These materials collectively ensure that fiber optic cables maintain signal integrity, mechanical resilience, and long-term reliability, with typical lifespans of 25–50 years depending on the quality of materials and installation practices.
