The broadband light on the fiber optic router is not on

If your router's fiber optic broadband light is not on, the issue is likely due to a loose or damaged cable, a problem with the ONT, or a router/ISP fault.

Check Physical Connections

Ensure that the fiber optic cable is securely connected to both the router and the optical network terminal (ONT). Inspect the cable for visible damage, sharp bends, or loose connectors, as these can prevent the signal from reaching your router. If the cable appears worn, try replacing it with a high-quality Ethernet cable, preferably Cat5E or higher.

Inspect the ONT

The ON

T is the small box attached to your wall that converts the fiber signal for your router. Check the status lights on the ONT: Green PON light indicates the ONT is functioning properly. Amber light may indicate an update in progress.

Red or LO

S (Loss of Signal) light signals a problem with the fiber connection.

If the ON

T shows a persistent red or LOS light, contact your ISP to check for external fiber faults or service outages.

Restart Devices

Power cycle your equipment: Turn off the router and ONT at the mains. Wait 1–2 minutes.

Turn the ON

T back on first, then the router. This can reset the optical connection and resolve temporary glitches.

Test the Router and Modem

If your router has a separate WAN or internet port, ensure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated. You can test the router by connecting a computer directly to the ONT using the same cable. If the computer cannot access the internet, the issue is likely with the ONT or ISP, not the router.

Advanced Troubleshooting

Clean connectors with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove dust or oil. Check for hardware faults: faulty transceivers or router ports can prevent the light from turning on. Configuration errors: ensure the router's firmware is up to date and that there are no IP conflicts.

Contact Your ISP

If all physical connections are correct, the ONT shows proper lights, and restarting devices does not resolve the issue, contact your ISP. They can verify if there is a service outage, perform remote diagnostics, or send a technician to inspect the fiber line. By systematically checking cables, the ONT, router, and ISP status, you can identify the cause of the fiber broadband light not turning on and restore your internet connection.
