How to test OTDR optical cables

Testing optical fiber cables with an OTDR involves preparing the equipment, connecting launch and receive cables, setting test parameters, acquiring a trace, and analyzing reflections and backscatter to identify faults and measure loss. Equipment and PreparationOTDR Device: Ensure the OTDR is suitable for your fiber type (single-mode: 1310/1550 nm; multi-mode: 850/1300 nm) and network length. Launch and Receive Cables: Use reference cables of the same fiber type and connectors.

The launch cable compensates for the OTDR's initial blind spot, while the receive cable allows measurement of the final connector loss. Mating Adapters and Cleaning Supplies: Clean all connectors and adapters to prevent contamination, which can cause inaccurate readings.

Connecting the Fiber

Turn on the OTDR and allow it to warm up. Connect the launch cable to the OTDR output port. Attach the fiber under test to the far end of the launch cable.

If using a receive cable, connect it to the far end of the fiber under test.

Setting Test Parameters

Wavelength: Select based on fiber type (single-mode: 1310/1550 nm; multi-mode: 850/1300 nm). Pulse Width: Shorter pulses (10–30 ns) provide higher resolution for detecting events like splices and bends, while longer pulses allow testing longer distances. Test Range: Set the OTDR range to at least double the fiber length to capture the entire trace.

Acquiring and Analyzing the Trace

Start the measurement and wait for the trace to stabilize.

Observe the OTD

R trace, which shows reflective peaks (connectors, mechanical splices) and non-reflective losses (fusion splices, bends). Verify the trace quality: smooth slope, minimal noise, and clear end-of-fiber visibility. Use automatic analysis or manual cursor functions to measure distances, insertion loss, and event locations.

Compare total loss against design specifications.

Best Practices

Always disconnect the fiber from active equipment to avoid damage. Use clean, low-loss connectors and adapters to ensure accurate results. Consider multiple tests with different pulse widths to balance resolution and noise reduction.

Save and document trace files with descriptive names for future reference and network maintenance. By following these steps, OTDR testing can accurately characterize fiber optic cables, identify faults, and verify network performance.
