What is a downlink optical port splitter

A downlink optical port splitter distributes optical signals from a single OLT input to multiple ONUs, enabling multiple users to share a single fiber in a Passive Optical Network (PON).

Overview

A downlink optical port splitter is a passive device used in PON networks to divide a single optical signal from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) into multiple output signals for delivery to Optical Network Units (ONUs) at the user end. It allows a single fiber to serve multiple subscribers, making fiber deployment more cost-effective and efficient. The splitter operates without any active power source, relying on the physical properties of light to distribute signals.

How It Works

The splitter receives the downlink signal from the OLT through its uplink port and distributes it evenly or according to a specified ratio across its downlink ports.

Each ON

U connected to a downlink port receives the optical signal, but only processes the data intended for it, filtering out other traffic. This broadcast mechanism ensures that multiple users can simultaneously access the network over a single fiber.

Key Parameters

Split Ratio: Defines how the input power is divided among output ports, e.g., 1x4, 1x8, 1x32. Higher split ratios allow more users but increase insertion loss. Insertion Loss: The reduction in signal power due to splitting.

Lower insertion loss improves network reach and performance. Uniformity: Consistency of output power across all ports, which affects signal quality for each ONU. Return Loss and Isolation: Measures to reduce reflected signals and crosstalk between ports, ensuring stable transmission.

Deployment Architectures

Splitters can be deployed in centralized or distributed configurations: Centralized Splitting: Splitters are located at a central office or cabinet, allowing flexible assignment of ONUs via jumpers. Distributed Splitting: Splitters are placed closer to end users in closures or pedestals, often in cascaded arrangements (e.g., 1x4 followed by 1x8 to achieve 1x32), optimizing fiber usage and network coverage.

Additional Functions

Besides distributing downlink data, splitters also concentrate uplink signals from multiple ONUs back to the OLT and can be used for monitoring optical signals without interrupting service. They are compatible with different splitter technologies, such as PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) and FBT (Fused Biconical Taper), which offer uniform or unequal split ratios depending on network requirements. In summary, the downlink optical port splitter is a critical component in PON networks, enabling efficient point-to-multipoint transmission, cost-effective fiber deployment, and reliable service delivery to multiple subscribers.
