Pole-mounted optical distribution box

Pole-mounted optical distribution boxes (PBOs) are installed using dedicated mounting brackets, lag screws or bolts, and proper cable management to ensure secure, safe, and organized fiber distribution.

Mounting the Box

Select the Pole and Position: Choose a standard wood or telecommunication pole with sufficient clearance from power lines and obstructions. Ensure the pole is structurally sound to support the weight of the PBO and fiber cables. Attach Mounting Brackets: Use the pole-mount kit provided with the PBO.

Typically, this includes brackets that are secured to the pole using lag screws or bolts. For example, two 3/4-inch bolts and four 1/2 x 2-inch lag screws are commonly required, though the exact hardware may vary by manufacturer. Secure the Box: Place the PBO onto the brackets and fasten it using the supplied hardware.

Ensure the box is level and firmly attached to prevent movement or vibration that could damage fiber connections. Optional Hoop or Strap Fixing: Some enclosures use a hoop ring or strap through slots on the back plate to secure the box to the pole, providing additional stability.

Cable Management

Feeder Cable Entry: Feed the main distribution cable through the designated ports. These ports are designed to maintain structural integrity and allow loop-through configurations for flexible deployment. Splicing and Patch Areas: Separate the splicing area from the drop cable patch area to simplify installation.

Use splice trays for fiber splicing and, if applicable, install splitters (1x8, 1x16) according to network design. Drop Cable Routing: Route customer drop cables through the exit ports. Depending on the PBO model, boxes can accommodate from 6 up to 48 drop cables, with dedicated SC/APC adapters or pre-terminated pigtails.

Slack Storage: Store excess fiber slack in the designated area or loops within the enclosure to prevent bending below the minimum radius and to allow future maintenance.

Safety and Handling

Fiber Handling: Avoid excessive pulling, bending, or crushing of fiber optic cables. Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer to prevent signal loss or cable damage. Weight Considerations: Some PBOs are heavy; use two-person handling or lifting devices when mounting larger enclosures.

Environmental Protection: Ensure the enclosure is properly sealed and rated for outdoor use (IP68 or equivalent) to protect fibers from moisture, dust, and UV exposure.

Final Checks

Verify all bolts and screws are tight and the box is stable. Confirm that all fibers are properly spliced, routed, and secured.

Ensure the PB

O door is closed and locked to prevent unauthorized access and environmental damage. By following these steps, a pole-mounted optical distribution box can be securely installed, providing a reliable termination point for feeder and drop cables in an FTTH or FTTx network.
