What does an aerial optical cable look like

Aerial optical cables are outdoor fiber optic cables suspended on poles or towers, often appearing as cylindrical or figure-8 shaped cables with protective jackets and strength members. Aerial optical cables are designed for overhead installation and are commonly seen on utility poles, communication towers, or transmission lines. They are built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions, including wind, ice, UV radiation, and mechanical tension.

The cables are typically cylindrical, with a durable outer jacket, and may include strength members made of steel, aramid, or dielectric materials to support their own weight over long spans. Types and Visual FeaturesSelf-Supporting (ADSS) Cables: These cables can span long distances without additional support. They often have a Figure-8 shape, where the optical fiber core is loosely distributed inside the cable, and the outer strength member forms the “8” shape.

This design allows the cable to carry its own weight between poles.

ADS

S cables are usually thicker and heavier, with reinforced jackets to resist environmental stress. Catenary Cables: These are helically lashed to a messenger wire or another supporting cable. The optical fibers are enclosed in a protective tube, and the cable is suspended from the messenger wire, which bears the tension.

Visually, they appear as a single cable running along a support wire, often thinner than self-supporting types.

OPG

W (Optical Ground Wire): These cables combine optical fibers with a grounding function, often installed on power transmission lines. They look similar to standard aerial cables but include metallic elements for electrical grounding.

Installation Appearance

Aerial optical cables are mounted above ground, supported by poles or towers, and can stretch across urban, rural, or mountainous areas. They are usually black or dark-colored, with a smooth or slightly ribbed outer jacket. In some designs, the Figure-8 profile is visible, especially in self-supporting cables, while catenary cables appear as a single line attached to a messenger wire.

The cables may also have visible reinforcement strands along the length for added tensile strength. In summary, aerial optical cables are robust, overhead fiber optic cables with either a cylindrical or Figure-8 shape, designed for long-distance outdoor deployment, with visible strength members and protective jackets that distinguish them from underground or indoor fiber cables.
