Requirements for Cable Trench Laying of Communication Optical Cables

Optical fiber cables should be laid in trenches with proper depth, width, protective conduits, and safety measures to ensure long-term reliability and compliance with standards.

Trench Dimensions and Depth

For standard optical fiber cable installations, trenches are typically 1–1. 2 meters deep to prevent accidental damage, with deeper trenches required in areas with frost or existing underground utilities. In India, TEC guidelines recommend a trench depth of 1.

65 meters for main cable runs, with a bottom width of 250–300 mm to accommodate cables and protective ducts. The trench bottom should be horizontal, free of stones, and tamped at transitions from hard to soft surfaces to prevent cable damage.

Conduits and Cable Protection

Cables are usually installed in PVC or DWC conduits, sometimes with pre-installed innerducts to facilitate cable pulling. Protective measures include: DWC pipes in areas with underground obstacles like water or power lines. Marker tapes buried 300 mm below the surface to indicate the presence of dielectric cables.

Tamped fill at transitions to prevent sharp edges from pressing against the cable.

Installation Techniques

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is preferred to minimize surface disruption, especially under roads or sidewalks. Trenches should be carefully excavated near existing utilities, using hand digging to expose known services before mechanical excavation. Cable drums should be stored upright on flanges, uncoiled tangentially, and handled to avoid torsion or damage.

Safety and Work Practices

Trenches deeper than 1. 2 meters require shoring or support, and workers must not enter alone. Ladders provide safe access, and barricades and warning signs should protect unattended excavations.

Machinery should not be placed near trenches where exhaust fumes could contaminate the air. All excavation work must be supervised by a competent person to prevent collapse or accidents.

Cable Handling and Termination

Cable ends must be pressure-tight and impermeable, especially for non-waterproof or paper-insulated cables. Proper preparation of cable ends and runs prevents moisture ingress, which can degrade transmission performance. Cables should be laid without exceeding minimum bending radius and avoiding excessive pulling tension.

Additional Considerations

Extra conduits may be installed along the route to facilitate future expansions. Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) or cable locators can help identify existing underground services before trenching. Contractors should prepare a cable route plan and jointing schedule in consultation with the project owner or buyer representative.

By following these guidelines, optical fiber cable installations in trenches can achieve long-term reliability, safety, and compliance with international and local standards.
