Cable routing process for entering the distribution box

Proper cable routing in a distribution box ensures safety, reduces interference, and facilitates maintenance by organizing power, signal, and grounding cables according to standards and best practices.

Key Principles for Cable Routing

Separation of Cable Types: Power cables should be routed separately from signal cables to minimize electromagnetic interference. When running parallel, maintain a minimum distance of 100 mm (3. 94 in.) between them.

Grounding and power cables should also be routed straight with smooth curves, avoiding sharp bends. Bending Radius and Cable Length: Ensure the bending radius is at least three times the cable's outer diameter to prevent damage. Measure the distance between terminals and reserve proper cable length; avoid splicing or adding connectors mid-cable.

Trim redundant cable lengths or bind them neatly if trimming is not possible. Routing Strategy: Route cables from bottom-layer devices near the cabinet door and upper-layer devices farther from the door to reduce crossovers. Use cable trays, rails, or bundles to organize multiple cables efficiently.

Flexible cable chains are recommended for moving parts, while cable entries protect cables passing through walls or panels. Mechanical Protection and Safety: Use cable ties, clips, and holders to secure cables and prevent sagging or accidental contact with live parts. Ensure metallic components are properly bonded and tested for protective conductor continuity according to standards like DIN VDE 0100 and EN 50085-1.

Halogen-free materials are preferred in public areas to reduce toxic smoke in case of fire. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Maintain proper segregation of cable types and bond all metal structures to reduce electromagnetic perturbations. Cable trays or conduits should be used along the entire path, and all components should be solidly bonded to minimize interference.

Maintenance and Identification: Label cables clearly and organize them in bundles or trays to facilitate troubleshooting and future modifications. Avoid coiling excess cable, and ensure easy access to terminals for inspection or replacement. By following these guidelines, cable routing in a distribution box can achieve safety, reliability, and compliance with electrical standards, while also simplifying maintenance and reducing the risk of interference or damage.
