How to get the conduit into the distribution box

To connect a conduit to a distribution box, first ensure power is off, then prepare the conduit and box, install the appropriate connector, and secure the conduit firmly while maintaining code compliance.

Safety First

Before starting, de-energize the system by switching off the main service disconnect to ensure no live wires are present inside the panel. Wear insulated gloves and safety glasses to protect against accidental contact or debris during installation.

Preparing the Distribution Box

Identify the knockout on the box where the conduit will enter. Remove the knockout carefully using pliers or a screwdriver and hammer, ensuring edges are smooth and free of burrs. Install the connector: Insert the threaded end of the connector into the knockout hole from the outside.

Inside the box, thread on the locknut or compression ring and tighten securely to prevent movement.

Preparing the Conduit

Cut the conduit to the required length using a conduit cutter, hacksaw, or rotary tool depending on the material (PVC, EMT, or metal),. Deburr the edges with a reamer or specialized deburring tool to prevent damage to the wires. Connecting the ConduitPVC Conduit: Apply PVC cement to the end of the conduit and insert it into the connector or box fitting.

Allow it to set before pulling wires through.

EM

T or Metal Conduit: Slide the conduit into the connector until it bottoms out. For set-screw connectors, tighten the screw; for compression connectors, tighten the nut until the internal ring grips the conduit firmly. Check stability: Pull gently on the conduit to ensure it does not loosen.

For metal boxes, ensure proper grounding through the connector.

Final Steps

Seal unused knockouts with KO seals to prevent moisture or debris entry. Inspect the installation for alignment, tightness, and code compliance before running wires. Pull wires carefully through the conduit, using the correct wire type (e.g., THHN/THWN-2 for EMT or PVC) to avoid insulation damage.

Following these steps ensures a safe, durable, and code-compliant connection between your conduit and distribution box, whether using PVC, EMT, or metal conduit.
