Full process diagram of fiber optic patch cord making

The production of fiber optic patch cords involves precise steps including fiber selection, cutting, stripping, connector assembly, polishing, and rigorous testing to ensure high-quality optical performance. 1.

Fiber and Material Selection

The process begins with selecting the appropriate fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) and connector type (SC, LC, ST, FC, MTP) based on application requirements. The jacket material is also chosen, commonly PVC or LSZH, to provide protection and durability. Proper selection ensures optimal signal transmission and mechanical reliability.

2.

Cutting and Preparation

Fiber cables are supplied on reels and cut to the required lengths using automated cutting machines for accuracy and efficiency. The outer jacket and buffer coating (typically 3. 0 mm, 2.

0 mm, or 0. 9 mm) are stripped using specialized tools to expose the bare fiber. The fiber is then cleaned with alcohol to remove dust and residues, minimizing signal loss.

3.

Connector Assembly

The cleaned fiber is inserted into a connector ferrule, often with epoxy glue (e.g., 353ND or Loctite 0151) to secure the fiber. The assembly is cured in an oven to ensure strong bonding. The connector housing and strain relief boot are then attached.

Proper ferrule alignment and concentricity are critical to reduce insertion loss and maintain optical performance. 4.

Polishing and Inspection

The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines and cleaned with ultrasonic equipment. End-faces are inspected under a 400x microscope to detect scratches, contamination, or misalignment. This step ensures minimal signal reflection and optimal return loss.

5.

Testing

Each patch cord undergoes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing to verify optical performance. Interferometers may be used to inspect connector durability and signal integrity. Only cords meeting strict quality standards are approved for shipment.

6.

Packaging

After testing, patch cords are coiled, labeled, and packaged according to order specifications. Proper packaging prevents damage during transport and ensures the cords are ready for deployment in data centers, telecom networks, or other high-speed communication systems. This structured process, combining precision cutting, careful assembly, polishing, and rigorous testing, ensures that fiber optic patch cords deliver reliable performance and longevity in demanding network environments.
