Installation of ordinary optical cables in Syria

Syria is actively expanding its optical fiber network through projects like SilkLink, but deployment faces high costs, limited coverage, and infrastructure challenges. Current Fiber InfrastructureSyria's optical fiber network is still in development. The country has a limited number of subscribers to fiber internet services, with only about 5,000 users connected to the “Fiber Net” service due to high installation costs and infrastructure requirements.

Fiber optic cables in Syria provide high-speed broadband, capable of up to 10 Gbps, and are resistant to electrical interference and harsh weather, making them superior to traditional copper cables.

Major Projects

The Silk

Link project is a key initiative by the Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to create a 4,500 km optical fiber network connecting major cities like Damascus, Aleppo, and Palmyra, as well as regional switching centers and a submarine cable landing point in Tartus. This project aims to position Syria as a strategic data corridor between Asia and Europe, providing a terrestrial alternative to congested Red Sea routes. The project is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete and involves collaboration with regional telecom companies such as Zain, Etisalat, STC, and Ooredoo.

Installation Process

Installing ordinary optical cables in Syria involves several steps: Construction of utility holes and trenches for cable pathways, as seen in UNDOF projects in Camp Faouar. Laying fiber optic cables and connecting them to existing backbone infrastructure. Tagging and identifying cables for network management.

Installation of racks and termination points in ICT centers. Testing and commissioning to ensure signal integrity and network reliability. These installations require specialized equipment and skilled technicians due to the technical complexity and the need to integrate with existing networks.

Challenges

High costs: Installation fees and subscription costs are significant, limiting access to wealthier areas. Infrastructure gaps: Many areas require new excavations and utility hole construction to extend the network. Security and logistics: Ongoing regional instability can affect project timelines and equipment transport.

Limited coverage: Fiber services are concentrated in major cities and affluent neighborhoods, leaving rural areas underserved.

Outlook

With the SilkLink project and other government initiatives, Syria aims to expand fiber coverage, improve internet speeds, and establish a regional digital corridor. However, widespread adoption will depend on reducing costs, completing infrastructure upgrades, and ensuring stable political and economic conditions.
