SPD in the home distribution box

Install a Type 2 SPD immediately after the main breaker in your home distribution box to protect against transient overvoltages and surges.

Purpose of SP

Ds in the HomeSurge Protective Devices (SPDs) safeguard your home electrical system and sensitive electronics from transient overvoltages, which can be caused by lightning strikes, switching operations, or other electrical disturbances.

Without SP

Ds, surges can damage appliances, shorten equipment lifespan, or even cause fires. Types of SPDsType 1 SPD: Installed at the origin of the electrical supply, designed to handle direct lightning strikes. Typically used when a building has a lightning protection system or overhead lines.

Type 2 SPD: Installed after the main breaker in the consumer unit or distribution box. Protects against indirect surges and is suitable for most domestic installations. Type 3 SPD: Installed close to sensitive equipment as a supplementary device, often used alongside Type 2 SPDs.

For most homes, a Type 2 SPD is recommended inside the distribution box, with additional Type 3 SPDs near critical electronics if needed.

Installation Guidelines

Place the SPD immediately after the main breaker to ensure maximum protection for all downstream circuits. Ensure the SPD's voltage protection level (Up) is compatible with your system voltage, and its discharge current rating (In/Imax) can handle expected surges. Maintain proper spacing if multiple SPDs are used: at least 5 meters between two voltage-limiting SPDs and 10 meters between a voltage-switching SPD and a voltage-limiting SPD.

If the SP

D is more than 30 meters from sensitive equipment, install an additional SPD near the equipment with at least 8kA current capacity. Use DIN-rail mountable SPDs for easy installation and maintenance, leaving space for terminal access and heat dissipation.

Maintenance

Test SP

Ds every six months for warning signs such as burned connectors or tripped indicators.

Replace SP

Ds that show signs of wear or have reached their maximum discharge capacity to maintain protection.

Additional Considerations

Ensure the distribution box has enough space for the SPD and future expansion, including spare slots for additional circuits or devices. Follow local electrical codes and standards, such as BS 7671 in the UK, to ensure safe and compliant installation. Consider environmental factors like humidity and temperature when selecting an SPD to ensure long-term reliability.

By following these guidelines, your home distribution box will provide effective surge protection, safeguarding both your electrical installation and sensitive devices from damage.
