How to attach a sprue

Attach a sprue to the heaviest part of your pattern at a 45-degree angle, using a diameter slightly larger than the pattern thickness, to ensure smooth metal flow and prevent casting defects. Key Principles for Sprue Attachment1. Placement: Always attach the sprue to the heaviest part of the pattern.

This helps control progressive solidification and reduces the risk of shrinkage porosity during casting. Avoid attaching to thin or delicate areas, which may break or cause turbulence in the metal flow. 2.

Angle: Sprues should be positioned at approximately 45 degrees relative to the pattern surface. Avoid right angles, as they create hot spots and can lead to localized porosity or incomplete filling of the mold. 3.

Diameter and Length: The sprue diameter should be slightly larger than the thickness of the pattern it connects to. Keep the sprue as short as practical to facilitate removal from the casting button, but long enough to maintain proper distance (typically 6–8 mm) from the casting ring. 4.

Flared Connection: Flare the sprue at the point of attachment to the pattern. This reduces turbulence and ensures smooth metal flow into the mold. 5.

Wax Tree Assembly: When creating a wax tree, place smaller designs at the top and larger ones at the bottom. Ensure the center sprue (main sprue) has adequate volume to feed all attached pieces. Avoid placing pieces too close together to prevent defects.

Temporary Attachment Methods

For wax or metal masters where soldering is not desired, you can use temporary adhesives or positioning techniques: Use a hot tool to fuse wax sprues to wax patterns for lost wax casting. For metal masters in rubber molds, a dab of epoxy (e.g., J-B Weld) can temporarily hold the sprue in place during vulcanization, allowing easy removal afterward. Alternatively, place the sprue and model unsoldered but adjacent in the mold, then cut a small link between them after mold packing.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not attach sprues at right angles to broad flat surfaces. Avoid choke gates that cut off feed metal. Smooth all surfaces to prevent sharp corners that may break off during casting.

Ensure sprues are not too close together to avoid turbulence and rough surfaces. By following these guidelines, you can ensure proper metal flow, reduce casting defects, and make sprue removal easier after casting.
