Relay Protection Device Diagrams and Wiring Methods

Relay protection wiring diagrams illustrate how protective relays are connected to circuit breakers, measuring devices, and control circuits to ensure safe and reliable fault isolation.

Overview of Relay Protection Wiring

Relay protection wiring diagrams are used to connect protective relays to the power system and associated control devices. They show the coil connections, trip circuits, auxiliary contacts, and supervision circuits without necessarily reflecting the physical layout of components. These diagrams are essential for installation, testing, and maintenance of protection systems.

Common Types of Protective Relays and Their Wiring

Overcurrent Relay (OCR)Monitors current and trips the breaker when current exceeds a preset value. Wiring includes connections from current transformers (CTs) to the relay input and from the relay output to the breaker trip coil. Can include time-delay settings for coordination with other relays.

Differential Relay

Protects a specific zone, such as a transformer or busbar. Compares currents at the input and output; if the difference exceeds a threshold, it trips the breaker. Wiring involves CTs at both ends of the protected zone, relay input terminals, and trip coil connections.

Earth Fault / Restricted Earth Fault RelayDetects ground faults in a defined zone. Highly sensitive (2–8% of rated current) and wired to CTs and the breaker trip coil. Often includes auxiliary relays for alarm and supervision.

Voltage Relays (Overvoltage/Undervoltage)Monitors system voltage and trips the breaker if voltage exceeds or drops below preset limits. Connected to potential transformers (PTs) and the breaker trip coil.

Reverse Power Relay

Prevents power from flowing from a generator to the grid. Wired to measure generator output and trips the breaker if reverse power is detected.

Typical Wiring Diagram Elements

Relay Coil Terminals: Energized by control signals to operate the relay. Trip Circuit: Connects relay output to the breaker trip coil. Auxiliary Contacts: Provide indication, alarms, or interlocking.

Supervision Relays: Monitor the health of the trip circuit (e.g., 96 S relay). CT/PT Connections: Feed the relay with current or voltage signals. Master Trip Relay: Aggregates multiple relay outputs to a single breaker trip command.

Example Functional Wiring

A simplified overcurrent relay wiring may include: CT secondary → Relay input terminalsRelay output → Master trip relay → Breaker trip coilAuxiliary contacts → Alarm or indication circuitsTrip circuit supervision → Monitors continuity of trip wiring These diagrams are often represented as DC schematics showing logic and functional relationships rather than physical layout, making it easier to trace control and measurement circuits.

Standards and Best Practices

Use standard device numbers and terminal markings (e.g., IEEE C37. 2) for clarity. Include color codes for multicore cables and proper ferrule numbering.

Ensure reliability, selectivity, and speed in relay operation. Include testing points for maintenance and troubleshooting. Understanding these wiring diagrams is crucial for safe operation, fault isolation, and system reliability in high-voltage and low-voltage power systems.
