How to use a fiber optic connector for a landline phone

To connect a landline phone over fiber, plug your phone into the VoIP port on your fiber modem or Optical Network Terminal (ONT), or use integrated wiring if available. Connecting Directly to the ONT or ModemLocate the ONT or fiber modem installed by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This device converts the fiber optic signal into usable internet and phone signals.

Identify the VoIP or POTS port on the ONT/modem. It is usually labeled as VoIP1, Tel, or POTS1. Use the supplied telephone cable (typically an RJ11 connector) to connect your landline phone to this port.

Power your phone if it requires electricity, as fiber-based landlines rely on external power unlike traditional copper lines. Test the connection by picking up the handset and checking for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone, ensure the cable is securely connected and the ONT/modem is powered on.

Using Integrated Wiring in Your Home

If your home has integrated wiring, you can connect your phone to existing wall jack points instead of directly to the ONT. Connect the supplied cable from the small white voice box (if present) near the ONT to the VoIP1 port on the modem. Once connected, all phone jacks in your home will be active, allowing you to plug in your landline phone anywhere.

For homes without a voice box, you may need an additional cable from the VoIP1 port to a wall jack to enable phone access throughout the house.

Additional Tips

Check modem compatibility: Ensure your fiber modem supports VoIP or POTS connections for traditional phones. Voicemail and services: Some fiber landline plans include voicemail on the ONT or modem; check your ISP documentation. Troubleshooting: If call quality is poor, verify cable connections, restart the modem, or contact your ISP for configuration assistance.

By following these steps, your landline phone will function over a fiber optic connection, providing clear voice calls while leveraging your fiber internet infrastructure.
