Fireproofing Standards for Horizontal Cable Trays

Horizontal cable trays must be installed with fire-resistant materials, proper spacing, and firestopping measures to prevent fire propagation and ensure compliance with safety standards.

Material Selection and Tray Design

Cable trays should be made of fire-resistant materials appropriate for the environment: painted or galvanized steel for indoor use, hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel for outdoor applications, and aluminum or fiberglass-reinforced plastic in corrosive or high-humidity areas. The tray must have sufficient mechanical strength to support the cable load without deformation, and fireproof trays require scheduled inspections to maintain coating integrity and sealing effectiveness.

Firestopping Measures

Where horizontal cable trays pass through walls, slabs, or enter electrical panels, all openings must be tightly sealed with firestopping materials such as fire-rated boards, firestop packs, firestop mastic, or fire-resistant mineral wool. Key requirements include: Gap control: The area between firestop packs and cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm. Backing plates: For large openings, install a fire-resistant backing plate before sealing.

Waterstops: At slab penetrations, provide a waterstop of at least 50 mm in height and 20–30 mm of firestopping material, with a fire-support plate at the top. Sealing integrity: Ensure all gaps inside and around metal trunking are sealed completely, both internally and externally, without visible cracks or voids.

Tray Installation Practices

Spacing and support: Horizontal trays should be supported at regular intervals to prevent sagging, typically every 2–3 meters for standard spans and up to 6 meters for long-span trays. Cable segregation: Power and signal cables should be routed separately to reduce fire risk and electromagnetic interference. Tray covers: Solid or ventilated covers can provide additional fire protection and prevent heat buildup, especially in high-density installations.

Compliance and StandardsNEC Article 392 provides guidance on cable tray installation, fill capacity, and support spacing to minimize fire hazards.

BS E

N 61537 and BS 6946 specify manufacturing and installation standards for cable trays and ladder systems, ensuring safe support and fire resistance.

Maintenance and Inspection

Regular inspection of fireproof coatings, tray integrity, and firestopping seals is essential to maintain fire protection over time. Any damaged or degraded firestop material should be replaced promptly to ensure continued compliance and safety. By following these guidelines, horizontal cable trays can be safely installed with effective fire protection, reducing the risk of fire propagation and ensuring compliance with electrical and building safety standards.
