Single-core fiber optic patch cord manufacturing process flow diagram

The manufacturing of single-core fiber optic patch cords involves precise fiber preparation, connector assembly, epoxy bonding, polishing, and rigorous testing to ensure high-speed, low-loss optical transmission.

Fiber Selection and Preparation

The process begins with selecting the appropriate single-mode fiber (typically 8–10µm core diameter) for long-distance, high-speed applications. The fiber is cut to the required length using automated cutting machines to ensure consistency. The outer jacket and buffer coating are carefully stripped without damaging the fiber, and the exposed fiber is cleaned to remove dust and impurities.

Aramid yarn (Kevlar®) strength members are cut to length to provide mechanical reinforcement.

Connector Assembly

Connectors (LC, SC, ST, or MTP/MPO) are pre-inspected under high-power microscopes for defects. The stripped fiber is cleaved with an automatic fiber cleaver to produce a flat, smooth endface at a right angle to the fiber axis. Epoxy (thermal-cure or UV-cure) is injected into the ferrule, and the cleaved fiber is carefully inserted until properly seated.

A crimp sleeve is applied over the aramid yarn and cable jacket to provide mechanical strain relief.

Polishing and End-

Face Preparation

The ferrule end-face is polished using a multi-stage diamond abrasive process (e.g., 9µm → 3µm → 0. 5µm) to achieve ultra-smooth surfaces with minimal scratches. End-face geometry is critical: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) requires a radius of 10–25mm with
