100g Fiber Optic Patch Cord Female Connector Test

Testing a 100G fiber optic patch cord with female connectors involves endface inspection, insertion loss measurement, OTDR trace analysis, and polarity verification to ensure compliance with 100G network standards.

Endface Inspection

The first and most critical step is inspecting both ends of the patch cord using a fiber microscope. Female connectors require the appropriate inspection tip to reach into bulkhead adapters or couplers. Inspect against IEC 61300-3-35 criteria for scratches, pits, and contamination, as even a small particle can add 0.

5–1. 0 dB loss, which is significant for 100G links with tight loss budgets (e.g., 1. 9 dB for SR4).

Clean connectors with tools like the Opti Fiber Cleaner for LC or MPO Push-Type Cleaner for MPO endfaces if defects are found.

Insertion Loss Measurement

Use an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) with an EF-compliant launch cord. Power on the source, allow it to stabilize, and set the wavelength according to the fiber type: 850 nm for multimode SR4, 1310 nm for single-mode DR1/LR4. Connect the launch cord to the patch cord and measure bidirectional insertion loss using the one-jumper reference method, which includes both connectors in the measurement.

OTDR Testing

Perform an OTDR Tier 2 trace for each fiber in both directions to detect splices, bends, or faults along the link. This ensures the patch cord and the connected network segment meet the required performance specifications.

Polarity Verification

Use a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to confirm correct polarity. This step ensures that transmit and receive channels are properly aligned, which is critical for multi-fiber 100G links like MPO/MTP 12-strand assemblies.

Documentation

Record all test results, including insertion loss, OTDR traces, polarity verification, and connector inspection outcomes. Proper documentation is essential for network certification and troubleshooting.
