Wiring of the distribution box with sockets

To wire a distribution box with sockets, connect the main supply to the main MCB, distribute power through RCCBs and branch MCBs, and connect sockets via properly rated sub-circuits with correct wire sizes and earthing.

Components and Wire Specifications

Main MC

B: Acts as the primary switch; typically a double-pole MCB rated 63A for domestic installations.

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents and electric shocks; commonly rated 30mA for single-phase systems.

Branch MC

Bs: Single-pole MCBs for lighting and socket circuits; double-pole MCBs for special loads like air conditioners. Wires: Use 2. 5mm² for lighting and socket circuits, and 4mm² for high-load appliances like AC units.

Neutral and Earth Links: Neutral wires from all circuits connect to a neutral bus bar, and all earth wires connect to the earth terminal.

Wiring Sequence

Incoming Supply: Connect the phase and neutral from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB.

RCC

B Connection: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB.

The RCC

B output then feeds the branch MCBs. Branch Circuits: Connect each socket or lighting circuit to its respective MCB. Ensure the neutral wire goes to the neutral bus bar and the earth wire to the earth terminal.

Wiring Direction: Typically, wiring from the main MCB to branch MCBs runs on the left side of the distribution box, and outgoing wires to sockets and lights run on the right. Binding and Labeling: Use plastic ties to neatly bind wires and label each circuit for easy identification and safety.

Socket Connections

For radial circuits, connect the live wire from the branch MCB to the socket's live terminal, neutral to the neutral terminal, and earth to the earth terminal. For ring circuits, ensure continuity by connecting the incoming and outgoing wires to the socket terminals in a loop configuration. Junction boxes can be used to extend circuits or add additional sockets safely, keeping all connections enclosed and protected.

Safety and Inspection

Verify all connections are tight and insulated. Ensure the total load does not exceed the MCB ratings. Conduct a safety inspection to check for short circuits, overloads, and proper earthing before energizing the system.

By following these steps, you can safely wire a distribution box to supply power to multiple sockets and lighting circuits while maintaining compliance with standard electrical practices.
