Configuring the Core Switch for External Network

To connect a core switch to an external network, configure VLANs, Layer 3 interfaces, routing, and firewall interconnections while ensuring proper isolation and default routes. Step 1: Plan VLANs and InterfacesCreate interconnection VLANs on the core switch for both internal departments and external connections. Assign interfaces to these VLANs to segregate traffic between internal networks and the external network.

For firewall connections, consider creating separate VLANs to isolate public network traffic from internal routes. Step 2: Configure Layer 3 InterfacesCreate VLANIF interfaces on the core switch and bind them to the corresponding VLANs.

Assign I

P addresses to these VLANIF interfaces to enable routing between internal VLANs and the external network. For external connectivity, configure a VLANIF interface that communicates with the egress router or firewall. Step 3: Routing ConfigurationConfigure default routes on the core switch pointing to the egress router or firewall for external traffic.

Use OSP

F or static routes to ensure internal VLANs can reach the external network and vice versa. Avoid assigning the same IP subnet to multiple Layer 3 interfaces; each VLAN should have a unique subnet. Step 4: Firewall InterconnectionConnect the core switch to the firewall using either a trunk port (for multiple VLANs) or an access port (for a single VLAN).

If using a trunk, configure subinterfaces on the firewall for each VLAN. Ensure the firewall IP acts as the default gateway for client devices in the VLANs that require external access. Step 5: DHCP and ManagementConfigure a management VLAN separate from VLAN 1 for administrative access.

Set up DHCP on the core switch or relay to ensure internal clients receive IP addresses correctly.

Enable DHC

P snooping and IPSG on access switches to secure IP assignments and verify source IP/MAC addresses. Step 6: VerificationTest connectivity from internal VLANs to the external network. Verify routing tables, VLAN assignments, and firewall rules.

Ensure that traffic flows correctly through the core switch to the firewall and egress router without conflicts. By following these steps, the core switch will be properly configured to handle internal VLAN traffic while securely routing external network traffic through the firewall and egress router.
