How to reset an overheat relay protector

Resetting an overheat or thermal overload relay involves ensuring the motor or device has cooled, inspecting for faults, and pressing the reset button or using a remote reset function.

Safety Precautions Before Resetting

Disconnect Power: Always cut off power to the motor or device before touching the relay to prevent electric shock or further damage. Inspect the Motor and Circuit: Check for proper ventilation, clean air passages, correct motor load, balanced phase voltage, and mechanical faults such as worn bearings. Allow Cooling: If the motor has overheated, wait 5–10 minutes for it to cool before attempting a reset.

Manual Reset Procedure

Locate the Reset Button: Most relays have a red or black reset button on the starter or relay housing. Press the Reset Button: Once the motor has cooled and the fault is corrected, press and hold the button until you hear a click indicating the relay has reset. Restart the Motor: Restore power and observe the motor's operation to ensure it runs normally without tripping again.

Remote or Automatic Reset Options

Automatic Reset: Some relays can be set to automatically reset after the overload condition clears, eliminating the need for manual intervention. Remote Reset: Certain relays, such as the Tesys LRD series, allow remote reset via a push button mounted on the panel door, connected to the relay with a flexible cable. Electrical Reset Devices: Some relays can be reset using a voltage pulse applied to the coil, which can be configured for remote or automated control.

Troubleshooting Persistent Trips

Ensure enough cooling time has passed. Verify relay settings match the motor's rated current. Check for ongoing issues like phase loss, mechanical jams, or incorrect load.

If the relay does not reset or trips repeatedly, it may require replacement or professional inspection. By following these steps and precautions, you can safely reset an overheat or thermal overload relay and prevent further damage to your motor or electrical system.
