Fiber Optic Distance Sensor Testing

Fiber optic sensors measure distance by detecting changes in light intensity, phase, or wavelength reflected from a target, converting these changes into precise displacement or position values.

Principles of Fiber Optic Distance Measurement

Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a target surface and receiving the reflected light. The amount of reflected light or its phase/wavelength shift is proportional to the distance between the probe tip and the target. Two common approaches are: Intensity-based sensors: Measure the change in light intensity reflected from the target.

As the target moves closer or farther, the light received by the sensor changes, producing a voltage output that correlates with distance. Interferometric sensors: Use white light or laser interferometry to detect nanometer-scale changes in distance. The interference pattern of light waves provides absolute distance measurements with extremely high accuracy.

Steps to Measure Distance

Select the appropriate sensor: Choose a fiber optic sensor suitable for your measurement range and required accuracy. For example, FDM-1 or FDM-2 systems offer micrometer-range measurements, while FDM-3 can measure up to 1 meter with nanometer resolution. Install the probe: Position the fiber optic probe close to the target surface.

Miniaturized probes can fit into tight spaces, even as small as 50–80 microns in diameter. Calibrate the sensor: Use automated calibration routines or reference surfaces to ensure the sensor output corresponds accurately to known distances. Acquire the signal: The sensor converts reflected light into an electrical signal.

For intensity-based sensors, the voltage output varies with distance; for interferometric sensors, the phase or wavelength shift is analyzed. Interpret the data: Use the sensor's evaluation unit or software to convert the electrical signal into distance values. High-precision systems can detect changes in the nanometer range and provide absolute distance measurements.

Integrate into your system: Fiber optic sensors can be connected to production machines or measurement setups via fiber-optic cables, allowing remote placement of the evaluation unit and multipoint measurements. AdvantagesNon-contact measurement prevents mechanical interference with the target. High sensitivity and accuracy, capable of nanometer resolution.

Immunity to electromagnetic interference, suitable for harsh environments. Flexible and miniaturized probes allow measurements in confined spaces. Long-distance signal transmission with minimal attenuation.

By following these steps and selecting the appropriate fiber optic sensor type, you can accurately measure distances, displacements, or vibrations in industrial, laboratory, or precision manufacturing applications.
