Fiber Optic Cold Terminal Connector

A fiber optic cold terminal connector, also known as a fast or mechanical splice connector, allows quick field termination of fiber cables without fusion splicing, using mechanical alignment or index-matching gel for optical signal transmission.

Overview

A fiber optic cold connector is a field-installable device that terminates optical fibers without requiring a fusion splicer. It aligns the bare fiber with a short fiber stub inside the connector body using mechanical clamping or pre-installed index-matching gel, enabling light to pass through with minimal loss. These connectors are ideal for FTTH deployments, emergency repairs, and small-scale installations where speed and flexibility are critical.

Types and FeaturesSC/APC Cold Connectors: Feature an 8-degree angled endface polish, providing return loss ≥60dB, commonly used in GPON, EPON, and CATV networks for low back reflection. SC/UPC Cold Connectors: Use ultra-physical contact polish with return loss ≥50dB, suitable for general telecom and data applications. Material and Durability: Many connectors use PEI materials, supporting temperatures from -40℃ to 75℃, offering fire retardance, wear-resistance, and high-temperature tolerance.

Reusability: High-quality cold connectors can be reused up to 1000 times without significant performance degradation.

Installation Process

Remove the dust cap and pass the optical cable through it. Strip the cable coating, leaving about 50 mm of fiber with coating. Fix the fiber using a length-cutting instrument and trim excess fiber.

Clean the fiber with alcohol and a dust-free cloth. Cut the bare fiber to approximately 10 mm. Insert the bare fiber into the connector, slightly bending it for proper alignment.

Clamp the fiber with the tail cover and secure the dust cap. Lock the fiber in place using the connector's switch or locking mechanism.

Install the S

C housing to complete the termination.

Advantages

Fast Installation: Eliminates the need for fusion splicing, reducing labor and tool costs. Field Flexibility: Can be installed on-site, making it suitable for emergency repairs or temporary setups. High Performance: Provides low insertion loss (50 dB for SC/UPC, ≥60 dB for SC/APC) when properly installed.

Compatibility: Works with standard patch panels, transceivers, and distribution boxes, supporting both single-mode and multi-mode fibers. ApplicationsFTTH Drop Cable Termination: Quick connection at customer premises. Distribution Boxes: Patching and network restoration.

Emergency Repairs: Rapid deployment in telecom or CATV networks. Data Centers: Temporary or high-density fiber connections where speed is essential. Fiber optic cold terminal connectors are a practical solution for efficient, reliable, and reusable fiber terminations, especially in environments where speed, flexibility, and minimal tool requirements are priorities.
