Network cable tray installation and cable routing

Network cable routing trays are structured pathways designed to organize, protect, and efficiently route network, power, and AV cables in commercial and industrial environments.

Types of Cable Trays

Wire Mesh/

Basket Trays: Made from welded steel mesh, these trays are lightweight yet strong, providing excellent airflow and easy access for cable installation and maintenance. They are ideal for data centers and IT closets, supporting copper, fiber optic, and AV cables while reducing cutting during sweeps by up to 50 percent. Ladder Trays: These consist of side rails connected by rungs, suitable for heavy cable bundles and power cables.

Ladder trays evenly distribute cable loads and are often used above rack enclosures or in industrial settings. Solid Bottom or Channel Trays: Provide full support for sensitive cables, protecting them from dust and debris. These are commonly used for fiber optic cables or environments requiring extra protection.

Materials and Construction

Cable trays are typically made from steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, often with protective coatings like zinc plating or electro-zinc resistance to prevent corrosion. Wire mesh trays are lighter than solid trays and allow for better ventilation, reducing heat buildup around cables.

Installation and Routing

Mounting Options: Trays can be ceiling-mounted, wall-mounted, or floor-based depending on space and accessibility requirements. Support Spacing: It is recommended to add support every five feet for wire mesh trays to maintain structural integrity. Planning: Determine cable paths, measure lengths with extra slack, and calculate tray fill percentages to avoid overcrowding.

Components: Use brackets, elbows, splice couplers, and hangers to create continuous, organized pathways.

Advantages

Cable Protection: Prevents physical damage and reduces interference. Scalability: Easy to add or remove cables as network needs grow. Maintenance: Open designs allow quick access for inspection or re-routing.

Compliance: Many trays are UL Listed and meet NEC grounding requirements.

Applications

Cable trays are widely used in data centers, network closets, hospitals, schools, office buildings, and industrial facilities. They support network, AV, fiber optic, and power cabling while maintaining a professional and organized infrastructure. By selecting the appropriate tray type, material, and installation method, organizations can ensure efficient cable management, improved airflow, and long-term network reliability.
