What stresses occur during optical cable laying

Optical fiber cables are highly sensitive to mechanical and environmental stresses during installation, including bending, tension, twisting, crushing, and temperature extremes.

Mechanical Stresses

Bending Stress: Exceeding the minimum bend radius of a cable can compress or stretch the fiber core, causing micro-cracks or permanent damage, which increases signal attenuation and may lead to complete signal failure. For single-mode fibers, the minimum bend radius is typically 10 times the cable diameter, while for multimode fibers it is around 7. 5 times the diameter.

Tensile Stress: Pulling the cable beyond its maximum tensile strength can stretch or break the fiber. Loose-tube and ribbon cables often have a maximum pulling tension of around 600 lbf, and exceeding this can deform the cable tubes or damage the fibers. Twisting and Kinking: Twisting the cable during pulling or improper handling can stress the fibers internally.

Using figure-8 loops on the ground and swivels during pulling helps prevent accumulation of twists. Crushing and Pinching: Pressure from clamps, crossing cables, or tight conduits can crush the cable, deforming the tubes and damaging fibers. Short-term loads exceeding 125 lbf per linear inch can be harmful.

Environmental Stresses

Temperature Extremes: High or low temperatures can make the cable sheath brittle or soft, increasing susceptibility to cracks or deformation. Outdoor cables are typically rated for -40°C to +85°C, but exposure beyond this range can damage the jacket and core.

Moisture and U

V Exposure: Water ingress in loose-tube cables can freeze and expand, cracking the buffer tubes.

Prolonged U

V exposure can degrade the jacket, allowing moisture to penetrate and weaken the fiber.

Handling and Installation Risks

Improper handling, such as dragging cables over sharp objects, stepping on them, or using inadequate grips, can introduce localized stress points. Accidental dig-ups or sudden jerks during installation can also create stress-time events that reduce fiber lifetime.

Summary

During optical cable laying, fibers are subjected to bending, tensile, twisting, crushing, temperature, moisture, and UV stresses. Following proper installation practices—respecting bend radius, using figure-8 loops, controlling pulling tension, avoiding sharp edges, and protecting against environmental extremes—is essential to maintain cable integrity and long-term performance.
