How to perform aggregation on a TP-Managed Switch

You can perform aggregation on a TP-Link managed switch by configuring a Link Aggregation Group (LAG) using either static LAG or LACP to combine multiple ports into a single logical link for higher bandwidth and redundancy.

Understanding Aggregation Options

Static LA

G: Manually groups multiple ports into a single logical link. It does not dynamically negotiate with the connected device.

LAC

P (Link Aggregation Control Protocol): Defined in IEEE 802. 3ad, LACP dynamically combines multiple physical links into a logical link, automatically handling link failures and load balancing.

Configuration Steps for LACP

Access the Web Management Interface: Log in to your TP-Link switch via its web interface.

Navigate to LA

G Settings: Go to Switching > LAG or Link Aggregation depending on your model. Select Ports for Aggregation: Choose the physical ports you want to aggregate. For example, ports 10, 11, and 12 on one switch and corresponding ports on the other switch.

Assign an Admin Key: Ports with the same Admin Key will be grouped together. Leave port priority as default unless specific prioritization is needed.

Set LAC

P Mode: Choose Active to enable LACP negotiation or Passive if the switch should respond to LACP requests only. Enable the status and click Apply. Verify Configuration: Ensure the LAG appears in the LAG table and that the connected device is configured with matching LAG settings to prevent broadcast storms.

Additional Considerations

Hash Algorithm: Some switches allow you to select a hash algorithm (e.g., SRC IP + DST IP) to distribute traffic across aggregated links more evenly. Cabling: Do not connect multiple cables between switches before configuring LAG, as this can create network loops and broadcast storms. Monitoring: Use the switch's web interface or SNMP tools to monitor LAG performance and troubleshoot connectivity issues.

Benefits of Aggregation

Increased Bandwidth: Multiple physical links act as a single high-speed logical link. Redundancy: If one link fails, traffic continues over the remaining links. Load Balancing: Traffic is distributed across aggregated ports for better performance.

By following these steps, you can successfully configure aggregation on TP-Link managed switches, ensuring higher network reliability and performance.
