How are optical cables distributed from the optical distribution box

Inside an optical distribution box, optical cables are routed, spliced, and terminated using adapters and splice trays to ensure secure, organized, and low-loss connections.

Cable Entry and Fixing

Optical cables enter the distribution box through designated cable inlet holes, often equipped with grommets to prevent fraying and provide dust and water protection. The main trunk of the fiber cable is secured using cable ties or movable clips to prevent tension and maintain proper routing when the front panel or drawer of the box is pulled out. The trunk length is kept sufficient to avoid stress on the fibers.

Splicing and Termination

Inside the box, fibers are either pre-terminated pigtails or spliced to the incoming cable. Splicing is typically done in splice trays, which protect the fiber joints and maintain the required bend radius to prevent signal loss. Each fiber is carefully routed to avoid sharp bends or crushing.

Adapter Panels and Connectors

The distribution box contains adapter panels or patch panels mounted on the front panel. Each fiber is connected to a corresponding port on the adapter panel, ensuring a one-to-one mapping between incoming and outgoing fibers. Common connectors include SC or LC types, chosen for their low insertion loss and ease of use.

The adapter panels are often secured with bend radius control clips to maintain fiber integrity.

Cable Management

Proper fiber routing and management is critical. The box may include rings, guides, or holders to organize fibers neatly, prevent tangling, and maintain the minimum bend radius. Individual branch fibers may not require additional ties, but the main trunk is always secured to prevent movement.

Summary

In essence, the optical distribution box functions as a central hub for fiber management. Incoming fibers are fixed, routed, and either spliced or connected to adapter panels. Outgoing fibers are then routed to their destinations, all while ensuring protection, proper bend radius, and organized cable management to maintain signal quality and network reliability.
