North Korean Cable Tray Installation Requirements

While North Korea does not publicly publish specific cable tray standards, international best practices from NEC, IEC, and NEMA provide a reliable framework for safe and effective installation.

General Installation Guidelines

Cable Tray Types and Materials: Cable trays can be made from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) depending on environmental conditions and load requirements. Common types include ladder trays, ventilated trays, solid-bottom trays, and wire mesh trays. Stainless steel (AISI 316L) is preferred in corrosive environments, while aluminum offers a lightweight alternative with good corrosion resistance.

Tray Support and Routing: Trays should be securely mounted on ceilings, walls, or floors using appropriate support elements and fittings. Horizontal and vertical bends, T-pieces, and crossovers allow flexible routing. Rung spacing for ladder trays is typically 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) to support cables without sagging.

Cable Types and Fill Limits: Only use tray-rated cables suitable for open-air environments. Power cables should not exceed 40% of the tray cross-sectional area, and control or instrumentation cables should not exceed 50%. Proper fill ensures adequate airflow and prevents overheating.

Separation and EM

I Protection: High-power and low-power cables must be physically separated to reduce electromagnetic interference. Dividers or separate trays may be used for sensitive instrumentation or data cables. Clearances and Accessibility: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance.

Cable trays should remain accessible and cannot be installed in hoistways or enclosed spaces. Grounding and Bonding: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors (EGC) if electrically continuous and properly bonded at all splice points. Bonding jumpers may be required to ensure reliable grounding.

Steel trays are typically limited to circuits with ground-fault protection up to 600 A, while aluminum trays can handle up to 2,000 A. Firestopping and Penetrations: When trays pass through fire-rated walls or floors, approved firestop systems must be used to maintain fire-resistance ratings and comply with safety standards. Practical Considerations for North Korea

Since North Korean-specific codes are not publicly available, engineers typically adapt international standards to local materials, environmental conditions, and industrial practices. Emphasis should be placed on mechanical stability, corrosion protection, electrical safety, and accessibility to ensure long-term reliability and compliance with general industrial safety principles. Following these guidelines ensures that cable tray installations are safe, durable, and maintainable, even in the absence of publicly accessible North Korean regulations.
