Power meter readings for circularly polarized light

Power meters measure the total optical power of circularly polarized light similarly to unpolarized light, but the presence of polarizers or analyzers can affect readings depending on the handedness of the light.

Understanding Circularly Polarized Light

Circularly polarized light consists of two orthogonal electric field components of equal magnitude that are 90° out of phase, producing a rotating electric field vector along the propagation direction. It can be right-handed (RHCP) or left-handed (LHCP) depending on the rotation sense. Unlike linear polarization, the instantaneous electric field direction continuously rotates, which can influence how certain optical instruments respond.

Power Meter Considerations

Direct Power Measurement Standard optical power meters with photodiodes or thermal sensors measure the total incident optical power regardless of polarization. Therefore, if circularly polarized light is incident directly on a power meter without any polarizing elements, the reading reflects the full optical power, similar to unpolarized light. Effect of Polarizers or Circular Analyzers If a circular polarizer or a quarter-wave plate is placed before the power meter, the measured power can depend on the handedness of the circularly polarized light.

For example, a circular polarizer designed to pass RHCP light will transmit most of the RHCP component but block LHCP light, reducing the measured power for the opposite handedness. Measurement of Emitted Circularly Polarized Light In applications like circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy, the differential intensity between left- and right-handed components is measured using a combination of a photoelastic modulator (PEM) and a linear polarizer before the detector. The power meter in this setup effectively measures the intensity of each handedness separately, allowing calculation of the dissymmetry factor (g_lum).

Calibration and Wavelength Dependence Circular polarizers and retarders are often non-achromatic, meaning their efficiency varies with wavelength. When measuring power, it is important to account for wavelength-dependent transmission to ensure accurate readings.

Practical Tips

For general optical power measurements, no special adjustment is needed for circularly polarized light if no polarizing elements are in the path. For handedness-specific measurements, use a circular polarizer or a PEM setup to separate RHCP and LHCP components. Ensure the power meter is calibrated for the wavelength of interest, especially when using retarders or polarizers that may introduce wavelength-dependent losses.

In strain or stress analysis using circularly polarized light, the measured intensity corresponds to retardation values rather than absolute power, so power meters are used in conjunction with imaging systems for quantitative analysis. In summary, power meters can measure circularly polarized light directly, but the presence of polarizing optics or the need to distinguish handedness requires additional components and calibration to obtain accurate readings.
