Dimensions and parameters of the power distribution system for edge computing racks

Edge computing racks typically use 19-inch enclosures with high-density PDUs, supporting 6–120 kW loads, three-phase 480V AC input, and optional 48V DC conversion with battery backup.

Rack Dimensions and Layout

Standard Width: 19 inches (rack-mount standard) for edge enclosures. Height: Commonly ranges from 12U to 18U for wall-mount racks, with floor-standing racks extending up to 42U or more depending on deployment. Depth: Edge servers and gateways typically require 400–650 mm, with additional space for cable management and airflow.

Airflow and Clearance: Leave at least 1U above and below active gear for airflow and cabling, plus 2–4U for future expansion. Power Distribution Units (PDUs)Form Factor: Vertical or 1U/0U horizontal PDUs, depending on space constraints. Power Density: High-density rPDUs can deliver up to 52 kW in a 72” high x 2.

18” wide footprint. Receptacles: Multiple outlets per PDU, with options for switched or unswitched outlets; selective switching can be added via SwitchLok cords for individual control. Remote Management: Intelligent PDUs allow monitoring and control of individual outlets, improving reliability and scalability.

Electrical Parameters

Input Voltage: Typically three-phase 480V AC for high-density edge racks. Conversion: AC can be converted to 48V DC within the enclosure to maintain battery reserve and support local DC loads. Load Capacity: Each bay can support 6 kW to 120 kW, depending on configuration and redundancy requirements.

Redundancy: Dual power trains are common, each capable of supporting the full critical load to ensure continuous operation in case of failure. Backup: Battery systems provide 30 seconds to 30 minutes of backup, depending on the application and load.

Design Considerations

Scalability: Modular PDUs and rack enclosures allow incremental expansion as edge computing demands grow. Cable Management: Integrated cable routing reduces airflow obstruction and simplifies maintenance. Thermal Management: Proper spacing and fan trays are essential to prevent overheating in high-density deployments.

Space Optimization: Slim-profile PDUs and vertical mounting maximize usable rack space while maintaining high power density.

Summary

Edge computing racks are designed for compact, high-density deployments with flexible power distribution. Standard 19-inch racks, combined with vertical or modular PDUs, three-phase 480V AC input, optional 48V DC conversion, and battery backup, provide reliable, scalable, and intelligent power delivery. Proper planning of rack units, depth, airflow, and cable management ensures operational efficiency and future-proofing for edge workloads.
