Optical signal of optical cable

An optical cable transmits data by sending pulses of light through a fiber core, converting electrical signals into optical signals and back, enabling high-speed, long-distance, and interference-resistant communication.

How Optical Cables Work

Optical cables, also known as fiber-optic cables, carry information using light instead of electricity. The core of the cable, made of glass or plastic, guides light pulses, while a surrounding cladding layer with a lower refractive index keeps the light confined through total internal reflection. Protective coatings and outer jackets shield the fibers from mechanical stress, moisture, and bending, ensuring reliable signal transmission.

A transmitter converts electrical signals into light pulses, which travel through the fiber. At the receiving end, a photodiode or optical receiver converts the light back into electrical signals, completing the communication process. This method provides galvanic isolation, eliminating electromagnetic interference and ground loops common in copper cables.

Types of Optical CablesSingle-mode fiber: Designed for long-distance communication with very low signal loss (0. 25–0. 35 dB/km at 1310–1550 nm), ideal for telecommunications and internet backbones.

Multimode fiber: Used for shorter distances, such as within buildings or data centers, with higher attenuation (1–3 dB/km) but easier coupling to light sources. Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Flexible and inexpensive, suitable for short-range applications like consumer audio (Toslink), but with higher signal loss (~1 dB/m),. Active Optical Cables (AOCs): Include built-in transceivers that convert electrical signals to optical signals and back, supporting high-bandwidth applications and reducing interference in data centers.

Advantages of Optical Signals

High bandwidth: Optical fibers can carry vast amounts of data at the speed of light (~180,000–200,000 km/s in glass),. Long-distance transmission: Low attenuation allows signals to travel hundreds of kilometers with minimal loss. Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Light signals are unaffected by EMI/RFI, making them ideal for industrial and medical environments.

Security: Optical signals are difficult to tap without detection, enhancing data security.

Applications

Optical cables are widely used in telecommunications, internet networks, cable TV, data centers, industrial automation, medical imaging, and consumer electronics. Specialized cables like Toslink carry digital audio signals between devices, while AOCs support high-speed connections for servers, USB, HDMI, and DisplayPort interfaces. In summary, optical cables transmit optical signals efficiently and reliably, offering high-speed, long-distance, and interference-resistant communication that surpasses traditional copper wiring in many applications.
