How to buy a router for fiber broadband

For fiber internet, choose a router that supports Wi-Fi 6 or 7, multi-gig speeds, and sufficient coverage for your home or office. Key Considerations1.

Wi-

Fi Standard: To fully utilize fiber speeds, especially 1 Gbps or higher, select a router with Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or Wi-Fi 7.

Wi-

Fi 7 routers, like the Netgear Nighthawk RS700S, offer faster speeds, better device handling, and improved range compared to older standards. 2. Speed and Ports: Ensure the router supports multi-gigabit speeds and has multiple Gigabit or 2.

5G/10G LAN ports for wired connections. Some routers also support LAN aggregation, combining ports for faster throughput. 3.

Coverage and Devices: Consider your home size and number of devices. High-performance routers can handle 100+ devices and cover large areas (3,500+ sq ft). For whole-home coverage, mesh systems like Linksys Velop AX4200 are ideal.

4. Security and Features: Look for routers with WPA3 encryption, automatic firmware updates, built-in firewalls, and optional subscriptions like NETGEAR Armor for enhanced protection. Advanced features like QoS, low-latency modes, and smart home compatibility are useful for gaming and streaming.

5. Budget: Entry-level Wi-Fi 6 routers start around $80–$150, while high-end Wi-Fi 7 or multi-gig routers can exceed $300. Choose based on your speed requirements, home size, and number of devices.

Recommended Routers

Netgear Nighthawk RS700S (Wi-Fi 7): Best overall for fiber, supports multi-gig speeds, wide coverage, and up to 200 devices.

ASUS RO

G GT-AXE16000: Ideal for gaming with ultra-low latency and high throughput. TP-Link Archer AX90 / AX55: Reliable Wi-Fi 6 options for budget-conscious users or smaller homes. Linksys Velop AX4200 Mesh: Excellent for eliminating dead zones in large homes.

Where to Buy

You can purchase fiber-compatible routers from Best Buy, Amazon, or directly from manufacturer websites. Check for compatibility with your ISP (e.g., Verizon Fios, AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber) before buying. Choosing the right router ensures you maximize your fiber internet speeds, maintain stable connections for multiple devices, and future-proof your network for upcoming technologies.
