AOC Active Optical Module

An AOC (Active Optical Cable) integrates optical transceiver modules at each end of a fiber optic cable, enabling high-speed, long-distance, and low-interference data transmission.

Overview

An Active Optical Cable (AOC) is a hybrid solution that combines optical fiber with integrated transceiver modules at both ends, effectively converting electrical signals into optical signals and back again during transmission. Each end contains optoelectronic components, including lasers and photodetectors, allowing the cable to plug directly into standard switch or server ports, similar to copper cables, but with the advantages of fiber optics.

Structure and Function

Integrated Modules: Each end houses an optical transceiver module that handles electrical-to-optical and optical-to-electrical conversion. Fiber Link: The optical fiber in the middle carries the light signals over distances typically up to 100 meters, customizable per application.

Plug-and-

Play: AOCs are designed for easy installation, reducing the risk of optical port contamination and simplifying material management in data centers. AdvantagesHigh-Speed Transmission: Supports data rates from 100G to 800G, depending on the form factor and manufacturer.

Long-

Distance Capability: Optical fiber allows longer reach than copper cables while maintaining signal integrity. Low Power Consumption: Uses less power than traditional optical modules or copper solutions. Lightweight and Compact: Ideal for high-density environments like data centers and HPC applications.

Reduced Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Optical transmission is immune to EMI, improving reliability. ApplicationsAOCs are widely used in: Data Centers: Interconnecting servers, switches, and storage devices in high-density racks.

High-

Performance Computing (HPC): Supporting InfiniBand, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel protocols.

ID

C Networks: Providing reliable, long-distance connections where copper cables are impractical. Comparison with Other CablesDAC (Direct Attach Cable): Copper-based, shorter reach, may include active or passive variants.

AC

C (Active Copper Cable): Uses Redriver chips to amplify signals over copper.

AE

C (Active Electrical Cable): Uses Retimer chips to reshape and equalize signals for clearer transmission. In contrast, AOCs leverage optical transmission, offering longer reach, lower power consumption, and immunity to EMI, making them preferable for modern high-speed network deployments.

Form Factors

Common AO

C form factors include SFP, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP56, and QSFP-DD, allowing compatibility with a wide range of network equipment. Overall, AOCs provide a reliable, high-performance, and easy-to-deploy solution for modern networking needs, bridging the gap between traditional copper cables and fully modular optical transceivers.
