Polyurethane cable tray processing steps

Polyurethane cable trays are manufactured through a composite molding process that produces lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and electrically insulating trays suitable for harsh environments.

Material Composition

Polyurethane cable trays are made from a composite of polyurethane resin and reinforcing fibers, which provides high mechanical strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and long-term durability. The monolithic structure ensures there are no seams, joints, or weld points, preventing moisture ingress and reducing risks of internal corrosion, mold, or short circuits.

Manufacturing Process

Material Preparation: Polyurethane resin is mixed with reinforcing fibers and additives to enhance mechanical properties, fire resistance, and electrical insulation. Molding: The mixture is poured into molds shaped according to the tray dimensions. This can involve compression molding or injection molding, depending on the tray size and design.

Curing: The molded trays undergo a controlled curing process, where heat and pressure solidify the composite, ensuring uniform density and structural integrity. Demolding and Finishing: Once cured, trays are removed from molds. Edges and surfaces are smoothed, and any necessary holes or slots for cable entry and mounting are added.

Quality Control: Trays are tested for bending strength, load capacity, electrical insulation, and resistance to moisture and chemicals. Typical bending strength is ≥120 MPa, supporting cable loads of 10–20 kg/m even in high humidity environments. Customization and Coating: Optional surface treatments or coatings may be applied to enhance UV resistance or fire retardancy, depending on the application.

Advantages Over Traditional Trays

Corrosion Resistance: Unlike steel or aluminum trays, polyurethane trays do not rust or suffer from seam leakage. Electrical Insulation: The material naturally insulates cables, reducing the risk of short circuits. Lightweight and Strong: Easier to handle and install while maintaining high load-bearing capacity.

Durability in Harsh Environments: Suitable for chemical plants, coastal regions, wastewater treatment facilities, and high-humidity areas.

Applications

Polyurethane cable trays are widely used in industrial, marine, chemical, and infrastructural projects, including underground parking garages, subway systems, hydropower stations, and outdoor corridors exposed to seasonal humidity. Their resistance to moisture, chemicals, and aging makes them ideal for long-term cable management in demanding environments.

Market Insights

The global polyurethane cable tray market is growing rapidly, driven by the need for robust, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant cable management systems. Key regions include Asia Pacific, North America, and Europe, with major manufacturers such as Henan Sitong Group, Voltamp Electricals, and Legrand US leading production. Technological advancements continue to improve fire resistance, electrical insulation, and durability, supporting broader adoption across industries.
