Optical module transmission power

Optical module transmission power is the optical power output by the module's transmitter, representing the intensity of light sent into the fiber, typically measured in mW or dBm.

Definition and Measurement

Transmission power in an optical module refers to the average optical power emitted by the transmitter under normal operating conditions. It is influenced by the proportion of logical “1”s in the transmitted data; more “1”s result in higher optical power output. When transmitting a pseudo-random sequence with roughly equal “1”s and “0”s, the measured power is considered the average optical power, expressed in linear units (W or mW) or logarithmic units (dBm) for convenience in communication systems.

Extinction Ratio

The extinction ratio is a related parameter that measures the ability of the transmitter to distinguish between “1” and “0” signals. It is defined as the ratio of the optical power when transmitting all “1”s to the optical power when transmitting all “0”s, usually expressed in dB. A higher extinction ratio indicates better signal clarity and lower bit error rates.

Power Control Mechanisms

Many optical modules integrate Automatic Power Control (APC) circuits to maintain a stable output power despite variations in temperature, voltage, or aging of the laser diode. This ensures consistent signal quality and reliable transmission over the fiber network.

Practical Considerations

Distance and Fiber Type: Higher transmission power can extend reach in long-haul or single-mode fiber systems, while excessive power may cause nonlinear effects in short-range multimode fibers. Laser Type: Laser diodes (LD) generally provide higher output power and better coupling efficiency than LEDs, making them suitable for high-speed or long-distance applications. Monitoring: Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) allows real-time measurement of transmitted optical power, helping maintain network performance and detect faults early.

Understanding and managing optical module transmission power is crucial for network reliability, signal integrity, and interoperability across different optical systems and vendors.
