10G Optical Module Link Connected

10G optical modules connect via SFP+ ports using single-mode or multimode fiber, LC duplex or simplex connectors, and may employ standard, bidirectional, or active optical cable methods depending on distance and deployment needs. Standard 10G SFP+ Connections10G SFP+ modules, such as 10GBASE-LR, typically use single-mode fiber (SMF) with LC duplex connectors for full-duplex communication. Each module has a transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) pair, requiring a two-fiber link—one fiber for transmitting and one for receiving.

These modules support distances up to 10 km at 1310 nm and are widely used in enterprise backbones, metro networks, and data center interconnects. For longer distances, 10G SFP+ ER modules operate at 1550 nm and can reach up to 40 km over single-mode fiber. They use electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML) and sensitive photodiodes (PIN or APD) to maintain signal integrity over extended links.

Bidirectional (BiDi) Modules10G BiDi SFP+ modules allow full-duplex communication over a single fiber strand using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Each module transmits and receives on different wavelengths (e.g., 1270 nm and 1330 nm), enabling two-way communication on one fiber.

Bi

Di modules reduce fiber usage by 50%, simplify cabling, and are ideal for high-density or cost-sensitive deployments.

Bi

Di modules must be paired correctly, with complementary wavelengths on each end. Active Optical Cables (AOC)10G SFP+ AOC cables integrate optical transceivers and fiber into a single factory-terminated cable. They plug directly into SFP+ ports, converting electrical signals to optical signals internally.

AO

Cs are typically used for short-range connections up to 100 meters over multimode fiber (OM3/OM4). They offer low power consumption, EMI immunity, and simplified deployment compared to separate transceivers and patch cables.

Key Considerations

Fiber Type: Single-mode for long distances (LR/ER/BiDi), multimode for short distances (SR/AOC). Connector Type: LC duplex for standard SFP+, LC simplex for BiDi. Distance & Wavelength: Ensure module wavelength matches fiber type and distance requirements.

Pairing: BiDi modules must be used in complementary pairs. Monitoring: Many modules support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM) for real-time optical power and temperature monitoring. By selecting the appropriate module type, fiber, and connector, 10G optical links can be efficiently deployed for both short-range and long-distance applications, optimizing network performance and infrastructure costs.
