Function of Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables transmit data as pulses of light, enabling high-speed, long-distance, and interference-free communication.

How Fiber Optic Cables Work

Fiber optic cables use thin strands of glass or plastic to carry information in the form of light rather than electrical signals. Data from a sender device is converted into light pulses, which travel through the core of the fiber. Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a slightly different refractive index, causing light to reflect back into the core through total internal reflection, allowing the signal to travel long distances without significant loss.

At the receiving end, the light pulses are converted back into data.

Components of Fiber Optic Cables

Core: The central strand where light travels. Its diameter determines whether the cable is single-mode or multi-mode. Cladding: Surrounds the core and reflects light back into it, maintaining signal integrity.

Buffer and Coating: Protect the fiber from physical damage and moisture. Strength Member: Provides tensile strength to prevent breakage during installation. Outer Jacket: Shields the cable from environmental hazards and makes handling easier.

Types of Fiber Optic CablesSingle-Mode Fiber (SMF): Has a narrow core, transmits light at a single angle, ideal for long-distance communication with minimal signal loss.

Multi-

Mode Fiber (MMF): Has a larger core, allows multiple light paths, suitable for shorter distances and cost-effective installations.

Advantages and Applications

Fiber optic cables offer high bandwidth, low signal attenuation, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making them superior to copper cables for modern networking. They are widely used in internet backbones, telecommunications, medical imaging, industrial sensors, and military applications. Fiber optics can carry data at speeds up to 100 gigabits per second with commercial hardware, and experimental setups have reached 1 petabit per second.

In summary, the primary function of fiber optic cables is to enable fast, reliable, and long-distance data transmission using light, supporting a wide range of networking and communication applications while overcoming the limitations of traditional copper wiring.

In September 2012, NTT Japan demonstrated a single fiber cable that was able to transfer 1 petabit per second (10 bits/s) over a distance of 50 kilometers. Although larger cables are available, the highest strand-count single-mode fiber cable commonly manufactured is the 864-count, consisting of 36 ribbons each containing 24 strands of fiber. These high fiber count cables are used in data centers, and as distribution cables in HFC and PON networks.
