Fiber optic broadband with built-in router

Fiber optic broadband typically requires a router, and most ISPs provide one as part of the installation, though you can also use your own compatible router.

How Fiber Internet Equipment Works

Fiber internet uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) instead of a traditional modem.

The ON

T converts the light signals from the fiber cable into electrical signals that your devices can use.

Once the ON

T is installed, it connects to a router, which distributes the internet throughout your home via WiFi or Ethernet cables.

Unlike DS

L or cable, fiber does not require a separate modem. Router Provision by ISPsMost fiber providers include a router with your service plan, often optimized for their network speeds and capable of handling gigabit or multi-gigabit connections. These routers are designed to work with fiber's high bandwidth and may support advanced features like WiFi 6 or WiFi 7, multiple Ethernet ports, and mesh networking for larger homes.

Using Your Own Router

You are not limited to the ISP-provided router. Many users choose to purchase a third-party router for better performance, customization, or coverage. If you do this, ensure the router is fiber-compatible and can handle the maximum speed of your plan.

The ON

T will connect to your router via an Ethernet cable, and the router will then manage your home network.

Summary

Fiber internet requires a router to distribute the connection.

IS

Ps usually provide a router with installation, but you can use your own compatible router.

The ON

T acts as the modem equivalent, connecting the fiber line to your router. For optimal performance, especially with high-speed plans, a fiber-ready router is recommended. This setup ensures you can enjoy the full speed and reliability of fiber broadband throughout your home.
