Fiber optic cable with wire reinforcement

Fiber optic cables use reinforcing wires or rods, such as FRP rods, aramid fibers, or steel wires, to provide mechanical strength, prevent sagging, and protect the optical fibers from environmental and installation stresses. Types of Reinforcing Materials1. Aramid Fiber Reinforcement Aramid fibers, such as Twaron®, are widely used in ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cables.

They provide high tensile strength to support the cable's own weight over long spans, resist environmental damage, and maintain non-conductivity, making them safe near high-voltage areas. Aramid-reinforced cables also offer resistance to moisture, heat, chemicals, UV radiation, and mechanical stress, ensuring long-term durability in challenging conditions. 2.

FR

P (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) Rods FRP rods, also called FRP/GRP rods, are lightweight, stiff, and strong, serving as di-electric strength members in fiber optic cables. They prevent cable buckling, reduce stress on the optical fibers during installation, and maintain cable integrity over its service life.

FR

P rods are available in diameters from 0. 4mm to 6. 5mm and can be coated with EAA or HDPE for better handling and grip.

They are suitable for both central and peripheral reinforcement in aerial and indoor installations. 3. Steel Wire Reinforcement Steel wires are commonly used in FTTH drop cables or butterfly-type cables for indoor and outdoor applications.

They provide high mechanical strength for middle spans of network constructions and allow the cable to be self-supporting between poles or buildings. Steel-reinforced cables are often tested using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) to ensure fiber integrity and detect faults.

Applications

Aerial Installations: Reinforced cables can span long distances without sagging, withstand ice loads, high winds, and UV exposure. Indoor Installations: Reinforcing rods or wires prevent buckling in cable trays and distribution networks.

High-

Voltage Areas: Non-conductive reinforcements like aramid fibers allow safe installation near power lines.

OPG

W and Suspension Systems: Structural reinforcing rods (SRR) reduce compression, bending, and clamping stresses on optical fibers.

Key Benefits

Mechanical Strength: Supports cable weight and prevents sagging. Durability: Resistant to environmental factors like moisture, heat, and chemicals. Fiber Protection: Reduces stress on optical fibers during installation and operation.

Safety: Non-conductive materials prevent electrical interference in sensitive areas. Versatility: Suitable for aerial, indoor, and high-voltage applications. By selecting the appropriate reinforcing wire or rod, cable manufacturers and network installers can ensure long-term reliability, optimal performance, and safe deployment of fiber optic networks.
