PEC cable trays

PEC cable trays are standardized wiring support systems used to safely route and protect electrical cables in compliance with the Philippine Electrical Code.

Overview

Cable trays are structures designed to support insulated electrical cables used for power distribution, control, and communication. They provide a safe, organized, and accessible pathway for cables, reducing fire hazards and mechanical damage while facilitating maintenance and future expansion.

Types of Cable Trays

Ladder Trays – Feature side rails connected by rungs, ideal for heavy-duty power cables and long cable runs. They allow excellent ventilation and heat dissipation. Perforated Trays – Solid-bottom trays with perforations for ventilation, suitable for medium-weight cables and areas requiring drainage or airflow.

Wireways and Non-

Metallic Trays – Enclosed channels with removable covers, used for protecting low-voltage or sensitive communication cables from dust, water, and oil.

Materials and Finishes

Cable trays can be manufactured from steel, aluminum, or non-metallic materials. Common anti-corrosion finishes include hot-dipped galvanized, pre-galvanized, and powder-coated surfaces. These finishes ensure durability and resistance to mechanical stress and environmental factors.

Installation Guidelines

Cable trays must be electrically continuous and properly bonded to ensure safety and compliance with PEC provisions. Supports should be spaced according to tray type and load, typically every 1. 5 to 3 meters for ladder trays.

Bends, tees, and crosses are used to route cables around obstacles while maintaining proper bend radius to prevent cable damage. Extensions and fittings must match the tray system to maintain structural integrity and ease of installation.

Grounding and Safety

The Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) is critical for safety.

PE

C allows the cable tray itself to serve as the EGC if properly bonded, providing a low-impedance path for fault currents. This ensures that protective devices operate correctly during ground faults. ApplicationsPEC cable trays are widely used in commercial, industrial, and utility installations for routing power, control, and communication cables.

They are preferred for projects requiring organized, accessible, and expandable cable management systems. In summary, PEC cable trays provide a safe, durable, and code-compliant solution for electrical wiring, with multiple types, materials, and finishes to suit different installation requirements while ensuring proper grounding and mechanical protection.
