Fiber Optic Cable Coating

Fiber optic cables use specialized coatings such as acrylate, fluoroacrylate, silicone, and polyimide to protect the glass fiber from mechanical, thermal, and environmental stresses.

Primary Coatings

Acrylate Coatings: The most common coating for telecom fibers, acrylates are typically applied in a dual-layer system with a soft inner layer (primary coating) and a harder outer layer (secondary coating). This combination protects the fiber from microbending, preserves tensile strength, and allows safe handling during installation and splicing. High-temperature acrylates are used in harsh environments, including industrial sensing and aerospace applications, due to their resistance to steam, gels, and elevated temperatures.

Fluoroacrylate Coatings: These coatings are non-toxic, rugged, and suitable for medical and industrial applications. They improve tensile strength by adhering to micro-defects in the silica fiber and can be used as cladding or coating material. Fluoroacrylates also allow mechanical cleaving and direct connector crimping.

Silicone Coatings: Silicone is soft, chemically resistant, and dampens compression-induced attenuation. It requires additional buffering with thermoplastics like ETFE, PFA, or PEEK for protection. Silicone coatings are easily strippable and are often used in environments where flexibility and chemical resistance are critical.

Polyimide Coatings: Polyimide provides high thermal stability and is used in high-temperature or harsh chemical environments. It is often applied to specialty fibers, including polarization-maintaining fibers, where durability and performance under stress are essential.

Additional Coating Materials

Other materials used for fiber protection include carbon coatings, PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), ETFE, and PFA. These materials are often used as buffer layers or cable jacketing to provide mechanical protection, chemical resistance, and flame retardancy.

Functions of Coatings

Fiber coatings primarily: Protect the glass surface from mechanical damage and microbending losses. Preserve tensile strength and prevent static fatigue. Provide chemical, thermal, and moisture resistance depending on the material.

Enable safe handling, splicing, and connectorization. Offer specialized properties such as biocompatibility, hermeticity, or controlled adhesion in fiber bundles.

Summary

The choice of fiber optic coating material depends on the application, environmental conditions, and required mechanical and optical performance. Standard telecom fibers typically use dual-layer acrylate coatings, while specialty applications may require fluoroacrylate, silicone, or polyimide coatings. Additional buffer and jacketing materials further enhance protection and durability.
